The State House that stands at the intersection of Market and Capitol Streets is the third incarnation of a home for Indiana’s legislature. The first State House was built in the 1820s to house state offices and county government, and a second structure was erected in 1835 for just $60,000; however, this building began to deteriorate after only 30 years of use. The current State House was completed in 1888, in a design similar to the U.S. Capitol. Recent renovations have returned the current State House to much of its original state, including the light-filled atriums.

Constitution Debate
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
“The Arsenal Tech High School Constitution Team
The award-winning Arsenal Tech High School Constitution Team will debate the merits of a constitutional government vs. an autocratic or dictatorial government. They will also highlight provisions of the United States Constitution designed to prevent abuse or misuse of government power. What is the relevance of arguments made by the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists to contemporary events under our present government (natural rights, republicanism and constitutionalism)? Two groups of six teens each give reasoned and impassioned statements. Lawyers acting as judges ask them clarifying questions. The evening finale opens the floor for questions from YOU the audience to the teens!

Spades, and was dedicated in 1912. In 1987 the library underwent renovations and celebrated its 75th anniversary. Bathrooms, new furniture, and an elevator were added, while the original first floor arrangement was maintained, the circulation desk was restored, and part of the original tin ceiling was cleaned and repainted.

Today, the mall has since undergone renovations and continues to be an indoor shopping mall, complete with a 12-screen theater. The Glendale Branch Library of the IMCPL system was also moved to the mall in 2000, making it the country’s first full-service library located in a shopping mall.

Public Art Project with Theater of Inclusion
“Flag Recording
During My Daily Constitution, public artists Theater of Inclusion (TOI) will create an aesthetic evaluative installation. The installation will be created from written responses gathered from guests at MDC events. This structure, built in public, will focus on the concept of inclusion as an evolving idea, drawing its design inspiration from the American flag. Participants will be invited to reflect on their MDC experience and to make a record of it on “flag fragments made of common file folders. These fragments will be transported to the installation site where TOI artists will reorganize the material and add to the growing structure.
Theater of Inclusion
Theater of Inclusion is the collaborative work of public artists Dante Ventresca and Rebecca Hutton. Rooted in Indianapolis, Theater of Inclusion creates place-based work throughout the United States. Mr. Ventresca and Ms. Hutton find unique elements in each site and simple grace in each individual. One part studio practice, one part performance, one part public dialogue, these artists work with found beauty, in any form, and shine a spotlight on that beauty by reorganizing it. Spectators often become performers. This experience leads to the insight that we are all part of a creative community that lives and breathes underneath what we commonly call “the community.
